Behind the Scenes of Watchtower No. 1
Battle scenes and medieval surroundings on the set of the Ukrainian fantasy
Nowadays, being able to get on set is like being able to jump on the last step of a train. There are more visual effects every time, and even now, on the set of "The Avengers" or "Game of Thrones," you can only see green screens and actors entangled with wires from head to toe.
Of course, everything looks great on the screen, but it wasn't for nothing that Ian McKellen burst into tears on the set of The Hobbit when he found out that he would have to play himself in the green room (Jackson wanted to make Gandalf taller than the dwarves, so he decided to shoot him separately and add him to the joint plans later). Therefore, I gladly took the opportunity to drop by the filming of the Ukrainian "Watchtower".
Sometimes an assistant director would appear from the nest and actively tell the "corpse boys" how to lie down better. I didn't see Radcliffe among them.
There were several reasons for this: firstly, I had never been on set before. Secondly, it's still fantasy, not melodrama, of which 90% are filmed in Ukraine. Thirdly, there should be shooting of battle scenes.
And what do you imagine when you hear such words? Of course, at least the defense of the Helm Gorge, or even an attack on Minas Tirith. I knew perfectly well that I would not meet thousands of orcs and Aragorn on the playground. But the Ukrainian filmmakers have found their own fortress.
More precisely, it was not found, but it was built in two years - from 2014 to 2016. According to the script, this is the city of Rome with the same outpost mentioned in the name. They created the fortress from scratch, but the fortress in Tustan became an example. True, it has been gone for several centuries, but the data has been preserved. It is clear that they were built as plausibly as possible - with a log cabin, almost without nails. No one is going to dismantle the complex after filming. And what do we usually do with such fortresses? No, they don't sell through offshore companies. An amusement park will be built from Rimovo (the name of the city in the painting). Moreover, there is already a park nearby, it remains only to come up with a few entertainment options.
If the fortress doesn't look much like a medieval tower from the outside (cars, a high fence, and green screens in several places probably get in the way), then everything inside is trying to send you back in time. Straw, authentic costumes, weapons, chickens, and even the infernal heat (probably a thousand years ago it was the same). The only ones who didn't fit into the overall concept were a dozen Shredders in distinctive masks. While I was trying to find at least some hints of mutant turtles, it turned out that they were Polovtsy antagonists. We got to the site just as they were taking over the tower (damn spoilers!).
