Phoenix (2015). Description + Review

During the Holocaust, Nelly Lenz was imprisoned in a concentration camp because she was Jewish. It was one of the most terrifying moments of her life. Despite the fact that she still managed to survive this nightmare, she was repeatedly tortured, so that her face remained severely disfigured. After her release, Nelly seeks help from one of the Jewish agencies helping victims to have plastic surgery. There they help her regain her normal appearance.
After the operation has been performed, the main character goes in search of her husband. Johannes was sure that his wife had not survived her stay in the concentration camp. Nelly herself believes that she got there thanks to her husband, who handed her over to the Gestapo. Now, more than anything, she wants to find out the truth. When the heroine finds her husband, he does not recognize her, because she has changed a lot after the operation. The woman decides to take advantage of this.
Johannes suggests that the girl play the role of his late wife in order to receive an inheritance, because they have similar facial features. Nelly decides to play his game so that he can show his real face, unaware that she is his wife. Although they were once close, now they have to get involved in a complex system of complicated relationships, all the cards of which can be revealed only at the end.

Director Petzold, with the help of his beloved actress Nina Hoss, who starred in many of his films, decided to show the tragedy of individual Jews who nevertheless managed to survive imprisonment in the camps. Despite the fact that this topic always remains relevant for the tolerant society of Europe, this story about the events in post-war Germany did not receive much resonance, although it is quite fascinating.
As for a feature film, there is not enough intrigue here, despite a very original and promising idea. Approximately the entire first half of the film is devoted to the way the heroine went to get to her husband, and only in the second half does their game begin among themselves, which should become the main intriguing part of the picture. The husband is the main antagonist here, but the slightly strange behavior of the wife seems to encourage her to treat her that way. The characters' behavior seems slightly unrealistic, but events are unfolding in an era whose features are difficult to judge without having been there.
It is worth noting that the director did not focus on the main character's camp past, showing her more as a victim of unhappy love than of Nazi bullying. Here he shows the girl as a strong and confident character who was able to overcome some difficulties and is ready to go further to achieve her goal. Throughout the whole picture, there is a feeling that everything could have been done better. Here, quite possibly, the lack of Hollywood budgets plays a role. Costumes and interiors look great, creating the right environment, but sometimes there are small details that hurt the eye.
